Message from the Executive Director

It is an honor to present the work and vision of the Human, Environment and Livelihood Promotion Society (HELPS).

Founded in 2009 in the aftermath of Cyclone SIDR, HELPS emerged from a collective commitment to restore dignity, rebuild lives, and strengthen resilience in Bangladesh's coastal belt. What began as a volunteer-driven response has grown into a professional, community-focused organization addressing the interconnected challenges of poverty, climate vulnerability, environmental degradation, and limited access to essential services.

Today, HELPS works with marginalized and climate-exposed communities to advance sustainable livelihoods, education, health and nutrition, WASH, disaster preparedness, and biodiversity conservation. Our approach is grounded in participation, evidence, accountability and partnership ensuring that our interventions are relevant, scalable, and aligned with national priorities and global development goals.

As climate impacts intensify and development needs evolve, HELPS remains committed to expanding collaborative efforts with government agencies, development partners, and international organizations. Together, we can deliver impactful, long-term solutions that enable vulnerable communities to adapt, thrive, and contribute to a more resilient and equitable future.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

Historical Background

Following the devastating Cyclone SIDR that struck the coastal region on November 15, 2007, the area suffered extensive destruction — homes, crops, infrastructure, the environment, and even the protective Sundarbans ecosystem were severely damaged. The disaster left behind widespread hunger, poverty, scarcity of safe drinking water, and countless homeless people living under the open sky or on embankments in unbearable conditions. Motivated by this harsh reality and driven by a deep commitment to rehabilitate the helpless coastal population, a group of dedicated young people established the Human, Environment and Livelihood Promotion Society (HELPS) on February 14, 2009 — a day celebrated both as Sundarbans Day and Valentine’s Day — with the noble vision of serving humanity and nature. HELPS has since emerged as a non-political, non-profit, and voluntary organization. Through active community participation at all levels, the organization continues its tireless efforts to improve lives and livelihoods, conserve the environment and biodiversity, and promote poverty reduction, education, health, nutrition, sanitation, and self-employment initiatives. HELPS works especially for the poor and marginalized, including the neglected, abused, deprived, excluded, orphaned, persons with disabilities, youth, children, and disadvantaged women.
